Biography

Eric Peter Wairagala is a Research Engineer at Lelapa AI, where he designs and executes advanced AI research projects with a focus on practical applications in product development. He pioneers the integration of Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) practices to streamline the transition from research prototypes to production-ready AI models, enhancing reliability and scalability.

Eric collaborates closely with product teams to identify AI-driven enhancements, conducts rigorous validation and testing of AI models, and maintains an active role in the AI research community. He advocates for ethical AI practices and leverages diverse programming languages and cloud computing platforms to develop scalable AI systems.

Eric is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science at Makerere University, focusing on Medical Machine Translation for Low-Resourced Languages. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering from Makerere University, where he developed an Angular leaf spot diagnosis system for his thesis. His research experience includes working as a Research Scientist at Makerere University AI and Data Science Research Lab and as a Machine Learning Software Engineer, where he spearheaded the creation of an advanced job application screening system and developed an automatic cancer disease screening system. Eric`s interests include data warehouses, data lakes, data analysis, data quality, reinforcement learning, machine learning, and AI governance. Outside of his professional work, he enjoys football, reading, and music.
